Airbnb Listing Photos: 12 Styling Fixes Before Photo Day

Your cover photo is the first thing a guest sees in search. Airbnb itself says the first five photos matter most, because they sit at the top of your listing (Airbnb Help).

Airbnb's photo guide covers the camera side well: natural light, horizontal shots, shoot straight ahead, no flash. What it doesn't cover is the room. A good photographer can't fix a crowded counter or a flat, creased duvet. That's styling, and most of it costs little or nothing.

Here are 12 fixes to make before photo day.

Before the photographer arrives

1. Choose your cover shot first. Decide which single view sells the place: the living room with the big window, the bed under the beams, the balcony. Style that view hardest. Everything else supports it.

2. Clear half of every surface. Count what's on the coffee table, the counters and the bedside tables, then take half of it away. Empty space reads as calm in a photo. Clutter reads as small.

3. Hide the everyday stuff. Cables, chargers, remotes, bins, cleaning sprays, the router's blinking lights, the laminated house rules. Put them in a drawer for the shoot. Guests will find them later. They don't need to see them first.

4. Steam the bedding. Creases show up in photos far more than they do in person. A white or light base with one coloured throw photographs cleanly and is easy to match when you restock.

Room by room

5. Make the bed like a hotel. Two layers of pillows (sleeping pillows behind, one row of decorative cushions in front), duvet pulled tight, throw folded across the bottom third. It should look inviting from the doorway, which is usually where the camera stands.

6. Turn every lamp on, with matching bulbs. Mixed bulb colours (one warm, one cold-white) make a room look patchy. Use the same warm bulb in every lamp in a room. Then switch them on, even in daylight. Lamps add depth.

7. Add one living thing per room. A plant, a few branches in a vase, a bowl of lemons. One is enough. Five starts to look like a garden centre.

8. Fix the rug. A rug that floats in the middle of the floor makes the room look smaller. If you can, size up so at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it.

9. Kitchen: three things on the counter. For example a kettle, a wooden board and a bowl of fruit. Everything else goes in cupboards. Guests want to see the space they'll cook in, not your appliance collection.

10. Bathroom: towels folded, lid down, nothing personal. Matching towels folded or rolled, the toilet lid closed, a new soap. Remove anything that looks used.

11. Show the workspace if you have one. Airbnb lists a laptop-friendly workspace among popular amenities (Airbnb Resource Center). If yours has one, style it simply: chair tucked in, a lamp, maybe a notebook and nothing else. Then make sure it gets its own photo.

On the day

12. Write a shot list and reset between rooms. List every room and the 2–3 angles you want from each. Between rooms, take five minutes to straighten cushions, re-fold the throw and check for stray cables. Photographers are paid by the hour. A shot list saves both of you time.

One thing not to do

Don't style the photos into something guests won't find. If the throw, the art and the plant are only there for the shoot, the first guest will notice. Style with things that stay in the flat and that you can restock. Photos should set the right expectations, and Airbnb's guide says the same.
